Esther Nowelle

Psychotherapist, BA, CCAC

I’ve always been inspired by self-development and driven by a deep sense of compassion for others. To me, humans are complex beings, not meant to navigate the journey of life alone.

I believe each person deserves unwavering support and unconditional positive regard, and these values guide my work as a therapist. My mother, a retired counsellor, has been a profound inspiration throughout my life. She taught me to care about the world – people, animals, the environment, everything – and instilled in me the belief that kindness matters deeply.

In my practice, I strive to be straightforward yet gentle. I’m often described as warm, genuine, humorous, and intentional in both my words and actions. These qualities help me create a therapeutic space where clients feel safe to explore, reflect, and grow. Witnessing the transformative journey of individuals as they rediscover their strengths is the most rewarding part of my work. It’s an honour to walk alongside people as they gain insight, overcome fears, or build healthier coping mechanisms.

My professional ethos is rooted in self-compassion and empathy towards others. I’m deeply committed to decolonisation and anti-oppressive frameworks, ensuring that every client is approached with respect and cultural sensitivity. I value collaborative supervision and teamwork highly, as they allow me to continually refine my skills and provide the best possible care.

My educational background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Victoria (UVIC). Early in my career, I worked as a Second-Stage Recovery House Support Worker and volunteered with community organizations such as Youthspace (NEED2) Crisis Line, Restorative Justice Victoria, Island Mental Health, and the Seniors’ Advocate Office of British Columbia. These experiences enriched my perspective and shaped my understanding of mental health across diverse populations. Working with Mount Saint Mary’s Seniors Residency in their Music Therapy Program broadened my appreciation for therapeutic interventions across different age groups.

After completing my studies, I joined an Outpatient Addiction Clinic, where I facilitated continuing care groups for individuals in recovery. This experience led me to pursue certification as a Canadian Addictions Counsellor (CCAC). With this certification, I expanded my practice to include addiction counselling and leading Intensive Outpatient groups. These roles have been pivotal in moulding my holistic approach to mental health and well-being.

Outside of work, I cherish moments with my dog, enjoy reading books and watching documentaries, and spend time connecting with friends and peers. My favourite pastime is beachcombing on the unceded W̱SÁNEĆ territory where I live, work, and play, a practice that reminds me to stay connected to nature and mindful of my settler identity.

Throughout my own life, I’ve navigated challenges such as balancing school, work, and personal commitments. Therapy has been invaluable for me during times of overwhelm, along with asking for help and leaning on my support network of friends and peers. These experiences have strengthened my belief in the importance of self-compassion and reaching out when we need it.

Even when you’re not in the therapy room with me, I care about your journey. My mission is to continually learn and deepen my understanding of how to be the best therapist I can be.
